Golden Pheasants and Snow

Title

Golden Pheasants and Snow

Subject

Japanese hanging scroll

Description

Two pheasants, one male and one female, perch in a snow-covered pine tree surrounded by out-of-season peony blossoms. Itō Jakuchū used the snow to make "windows" that surround some of the delicate peony blossoms. Jakuchū depicted the snow using two methods. First, for the falling snow, Jakuchū splattered the composition with white shell pigment on the front and back of the silk. For the snow on the ground and trees, Jakuchū used multiple layers of white shell pigment to crate modeling and texture. This image is included in this website as evidence for the Phoenix Composed Composition.
